Study Away

Widener University offers a range of study away opportunities designed to support academic, personal, and professional development through engagement beyond the home campus. These experiences may include academic study, service-learning, internships, and other structured programs in both international and domestic settings.

Students may participate in study away programs during academic terms, including summer, winter, spring break, semester, or full academic year experiences, depending on program availability and academic requirements.

Participation in Study Away is intended to enhance students’ academic experience, foster intercultural competence, and support the development of skills relevant to an increasingly global and interconnected workforce.

For more information, please visit https://www.widener.edu/student-experience/study-away or contact Widener International.

1. Definition

Study Away refers to any Widener International approved, credit-bearing or non-credit experience occurring outside of a student’s primary Widener University campus, including both international and domestic programs.

2. Program Types

Widener University supports a range of study away program models, including:

  • Faculty-led programs
  • Exchange programs
  • Affiliate or provider programs
  • Internships, research, or service-learning experiences
  • Other approved academic or experiential programs

Program availability may vary by term, location, and academic discipline.

3. Eligibility Requirements

Students must meet the following minimum requirements to be eligible for study away participation:

  • Be in good academic standing
  • Meet minimum cumulative GPA requirements as defined by the program
  • Maintain a satisfactory disciplinary record
  • Complete any required prerequisite coursework
  • Appropriate academic and administrative approval, if required

Individual programs or academic departments may establish additional eligibility criteria.

4. Academic Timing and Progression

In general, students are not eligible to participate in semester or year long study away programs during their first year of enrollment at Widener University. Exceptions may be granted in limited circumstances with appropriate academic and administrative approval.

Students are strongly discouraged from participating in study away during their final semester of enrollment.

5. Academic Credit and Course Approval

Academic credit will be awarded only for coursework that has been approved in advance and successfully completed.

The University will determine:

  • Credit equivalency
  • Applicability toward degree requirements

Approval of study away participation does not guarantee that all coursework will fulfill specific major, minor, or general education requirements.

6. Financial Responsibility

Students are responsible for all costs associated with study away participation, including but not limited to:

  • Program fees
  • Travel and transportation
  • Housing and meals
  • Insurance
  • Personal expenses

Financial aid may be applied in accordance with institutional policy and program eligibility.

Students are responsible for costs associated with the application process and for any non-refundable or non-recoverable expenses related to participation in the program.

7. Health, Safety, and Risk Management

All participants must comply with University health, safety, and risk management requirements.

Programs located in areas with elevated travel advisories may require additional review and approval. The University reserves the right to restrict or cancel participation in programs based on safety, security, or other risk considerations.

Students are required to participate in all pre-departure orientations and complete required documentation prior to participation.

8. Conduct Expectations

Students participating in study away programs are subject to all Widener University policies, including the Student Code of Conduct.

Violations of University or program policies may result in disciplinary action, including removal from the program, academic consequences, or additional sanctions.

9. Rescission of Approval

Approval for study away participation may be revoked at any time prior to departure if a student:

  • Fails to maintain required academic standing
  • Is placed on disciplinary probation or subject to conduct action
  • Does not complete required pre-departure requirements
